Old Edwardian Dinner.

TAIPING: The Old Edwardians' 45th Annual Reunion Dinner was attended by some 400 Edwardians with Deputy Minister Datuk Tan Lian Hoe to gracing the occasion at SSL Traders Hotel banquet hall in Taiping here recently.

The old tradition of having reunion dinner at Hokkien Association Hall Taiping, guest speakers standing on the dinner tables delivering lively speeches, free flow of beer, and after the dinner traditional dance(ronggeng) were all over due to changes in times.

It is now becoming more sophisticated, having dinners in banquet halls and delivering speeches on stages. There are no free flows of beer, no vocal and humorous talks, cat calls and jokes are all over.

The Organising chairman cum president of the King Edward VII School Old Boys Association Malaysia Taiping welcomed the old boys, the guest of honour Deputy Minister for Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism and other guests.

He thanked the 45th Annual Dinner, 14th Golf Tournament and the Editorial Committees for their jobs well done and also thanked all the sponsors, donors in cash (Azhar Ismail Sutan RM1, 000 and SSL Traders Hotel RM2,000 ) and kind and trophies.

He said on behalf of the old boys he extended their heart felt condolence to the late Tan Sri Datuk Abdul Shukor Abdullah who was instrumental in getting the school principal's residency at Station Road for the Old Boys where all the meetings of the Association were conducted.

The Association is annually contributing RM2,000 as Golden Jubilee Scholarship Fund for students from poor and needy families.

This year Goh Boon Teik, Datuk Tan Thian Hoo and the Class of 1965 donated RM12, 000 into the Long Heng Hua Scholarship Fund and from it eight students going to universities each received RM1, 500 and another two students from the late Datuk Dr Toh Thiam Hock Fund each received RM1, 500 and RM2, 000.

Under Mariappan Scholarship Fund a needy rugby player received RM400 and under Fauja Singh and Bagawan Singh Scholarship Fund a poor Punjabi boy received RM400.

The school principal Abdul Rahsib Husain in his reply to the old boys said about the school co-curriculum and curriculum activities and achievements of the school.

Datuk Tan thanked Mohideen and his organising committee for inviting her as the guest of honour in the old Edwardians' spirited gathering.

She said the spirit of “Edwardians was synonymous with the multiracialism being promoted by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.

This spirit of multiracialism promoted by the Edwardians is the essence for the whole nation in maintaining a continuing peace, and a greater future and I believe all Malaysians should foster reciprocal racial understanding as seen through the Edwardians' spirit.

For many of you, the fond memories of this great school and the education you received had helped you in serving the nation and this tradition must be sewn to the younger generation who will be the future leaders of our beloved nation,” she said.

She said the other old boys associations should emulate the old Edwardians Association as being a pillar of strength to its Alma mater, the King Edward VII School Taiping, in providing continuous financial support to the school and scholarships to the poor and needy students.

She said she lastly believed that without the full support by the old boys, the reunion dinner would not be so successful and she thanked the president and the organising committee for a job well done and “terima kasih”: for having her in the spirited Edwardians from a great school, King Edward VII, Taiping.

Prof. Datuk Joginder Singh in reply to Datuk Tan's speech welcomed her, and thanked her for being with the Edwardians. After commenting about her speech and the school, he in his usual manner brought the hall into stitches with his adult jokes..

The retired teacher of the school who was the sports secretary for years, Thong Hock Seng was voted the Tiger of the year 2012 and was presented with a memento of the Association in appreciation for his valuable contribution to the school especially in sports.
